St. Thomas College. (Efterskrift til Politivennen)

The St. Thomas College was inaugurated on Monday, 2nd instant, and the institution, as far as the preliminary arrangements and regulations are concerned, promises to do good.

The building, which is situated on Government hill, commands an imposing site and is well adapted to the purpose for which it has been appropriated. The arrangements of the several classes are well calculated and neatly furnished. Commencing from the entrance we find a spacious room on the right hand, set aside as the private office of the Director and for the meetings of the School Board. On the left is the private apartment of the first teacher, Mr. C. Dahl; we then ascend the staircase, where we find the Preparatory School, under the tuition of Mr. Mc Connby; having passed this we enter the several classes of the College, all of which are suitably arranged. In fact the entire arrangements, as shown us by Mr. Dahl, on our recent visit are deserving of much praise. Mr. Dahl is no doubt known by many here from his connection with the St. Croix Avis, which paper he edited for several years, and as far as public opinion goes, both here and in the sister island, he is well suited for the position. Mr. Sydney Speed, second teacher, is also known here, having kept a private school for some time in which he succeeded in giving general satisfaction. The instruction of the mother tongue is under the care of Mr. O. F. Bache, School Director, and the foreign languages are divided between Messrs Delauney and Durloo, the former as French and the latter as Spanish teacher. The fees of the College are $9 quarterly, payable in advance, and Mr. Mc Conney's Private School $2,50 monthly. There are up to date 31 pupils and we hope shortly to hear that number rapidly augmenting.

No preparation has been made for girls nor for the accommodation of boarders, and we cannot say whether at any future time such will be made.

" Better late than never" is a term not inapplicable here, and wo trust that this move in the right direction will meet with the support it deserves, and thereby encourage the exertions made in forwarding the march of education hi this island, which fortunately has been kept up to a high standard by the various private and denominational schools. - St. Thomas Times.
